THAILAND ISLANDS in PHOTOGRAPHS

I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to a lot of gorgeous locations over the years – St. Lucia, Dominican Repeblic, Hawaii, Grand Cayman – but the Thai islands are something out of a dream. Do you all remember the Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio? Those jaw-dropping beaches …. that is exactly what I woke up to every day for near 6 weeks. I know, insane right? I had to pitch myself, but it was real life. We spent time on Ko Samui, Ko Tao, Ko Phanghan, Ang Thong, Maya Bay, Ko Phi Phi and Phuket.

It took me WAY to long to edit through the photos from Thailand. I think, in a way, I was avoiding editing them because it meant this magical trip was actually over, but after nearly 8 weeks, I finally put my big girl pants on and forced myself to look at them and relive every perfect (and not so perfect) moment on the islands of Thailand.

So without babbling too much about Thailand, let me show you some of the beauty that is just a plane ride away. And if you are planning a trip to Thailand, pack me in your suitcase …. :)

HOI AN, VIETNAM in PHOTOGRAPHS

The last city on our tour of Vietnam was Hoi An. Hoi An was an old trading port town that is quaint, charming and has a lot of Chinese and Japanese influence in terms of the buildings, food and culture. It was the perfect city to end our time in Vietnam especially because we were able to celebrate the lunar New Year called Tet with the locals. Enjoy a photo tour of Hoi An, Vietnam!

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM

The first stop on our 2-month backpacking trip to South East Asia was Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I wasn’t really sure what to expect about this city, until I arrived and even then, I wasn’t sure how I felt about this city. It is a big city, full of lots of traffic (motorbikes everywhere), has a funky smell (think dried fish mixed with exhaust pollution), but great shopping. As with most of these posts, I’ll let the photos show what it is all about vs having me tell you. Enjoy, Ho Chi Minh City & the Mekong Delta!

VISITING SAN FRANCISCO

Last week, I was lucky enough to spend 5 nights in one of my new favorite cities in the states …. San Francisco. After 8 hours of sitting at O’Hare airport …. wondering if my flight was actually going to make it out (I left the night of the awful storms) … I finally boarded the plane. My dear college friend, Cortney, was transfered to California over a year ago, so I was DYING to visit her and explore San Fran and Napa. It was an incredible visit full of amazing photo opts, gorgeous views and lots and lots of yummy wine in Napa. I am completely smitten with this city … and I will need to return again soon.

My long weekend started with a tour of all the different views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Warf. Most tourists only need to see the bridge from one location, but I loved all the different views …. more photo opts for me (and you!).

INSPIRATION // WHAT THE GROOM SHOULD WEAR

Let’s face it, ladies. When it comes to worrying about what people are going to wear on the wedding day, the focus is often .. ok more like always …  about the bride’s dress. I mean who hasn’t watched the marathon Sundays of “Say Yes to the Dress“?!?! (I am totally guilty… I love that show!)

We are obsessed with the bride’s gown, but what about the groom?

Now, I might be wrong but I’m pretty sure most grooms are not watching “Say Yes to the Tuxedo” or tearing out pages from The Knot or Pinteresting their favorite shoes, ties and vests. So, I thought I would share a little inspiration on what to wear from some of my 2012 grooms. These dapper guys wore everything from the traditional black tie tuxedo (complete with bow tie) to a beachier look of linen pants and boat shoes.

Elliot dressed in a traditional tux with a bow tie for his black tie Chicago wedding at the Whit.

Groom Suit Tux Fashion Ideas | Brittany Bekas Photography Deowane stood apart from all my grooms with his chocolate brown tux and gorgeous leather Gucci loafers.

Groom Suit Tux Fashion Ideas | Brittany Bekas PhotographyNo matter what the groom opts to wear, I do think it is important for him to have a different look than his groomsmen. Nick chose to wear a different color vest and tie which set him apart from the other guys.

Groom Suit Tux Fashion Ideas | Brittany Bekas PhotographyA bow tie is a great option to give the groom an extra special feel to his look for the day. I mean how often does he rock a bow tie?

For a more causal beach look, Ivan sported brown leather Calvin Klein flip flops, white linen pants and a white linen short sleeve shirt.

Adding a personal touch like a watch or family heirloom is just as important for the groom as it is for the bride … so try to make sure the groom has something special too.

Jordan opted for a dressier look for his Riviera Mexico wedding with a beige linen suit and boat shoes.

THE DAY I SORTA BECAME A PASTA CHEF…

The first step to any problem is admitting it, right? Well … as much as I like to think that I can cook … that I make delicious, gourmet … ok more like edible meals … I have a confession.

I’m not really that good at the whole cooking thing …

So last week, my mom and I headed to the Cooking Skills Academy in Itasca for a class to get us in touch with our inner guido. Pasta Making 101. Yes, the Italians have never made fresh, homemade pasta.

I was a little worried about how this class was going to go as soon as we walked in and everyone had a bottle of wine but us. I missed the most important part of the class …. BYOB. In the long run it probably was for the best because the last thing I need is for some vino to interfere with improving my cooking skills.

Chef Paul was so informative and so fun! Not only did he teach us to make fresh pasta and gnocchi but also how to make two AMAZING sauces. Seriously, the whole time he was cooking them I wanted to just stick my spoon in there and eat it out of the pan (but I’m pretty sure the other students would not have appreciated it.)

I honestly had no clue how easy it is to make homemade gnocchi (which is my absolute favorite). Potato, egg and flour. Um, anything that has only 3 ingredients is a good recipe to me. Look out Giada … I might be taking over your gig with my newfound inner Italian.

I swear I am going to be whipping up homemade pasta all the time now. Maybe. (Ok probably not.) But in case I ever end up on Top Chef, I can look back on this experience with my favorite Italian …. my mom … and remember when I first learned how to make pasta.

MY LIFE IN IPHONE PHOTOS

I have a confession. I ALWAYS have some type of camera with me. Sure, I am not normally lugging around my Nikon D600 and lens, but I almost always 2 cameras on me. It makes me feel secure. That I won’t miss any moment.

So here is a little look at all the mundane and exciting things that I find photo worthy in my day to day.

CHICAGO EDITORIAL FASHION

If you have been following my blog, internet, you know I have been craving a personal project. A little something, something where I could just create without worrying about the 1,000 thoughts that run through my head during a session. I wanted to be a true art-tist for the day.

So, I teamed up with Annie from AK Style & Edit to pull together a creative team that was AMAZING. These ladies rocked all day long at Flux Salon in Westmont. Annie styled the whole shoot, and she came up with some awesome looks. Seriously. Wait to see them. Swoon….

setting sail

The night came at the perfect time. I had been feeling completely overwhelmed with building my business and trying to feel like I had it all together. I was trying to do everything perfect….above and beyond what people were expecting from me. So when my bestie, Christine, organized a girls’ night setting sail on Lake Michigan with some of our amazing girlfriends, I knew I could take a deep breath and just be me for the night and that form of “me” would be perfect for these girls.

We set sail from the gorgeous Monroe Harbor with our captain Tom who endured a night of gossip, girl talk and wine and cheese. What a trooper!

I was LOVIN’ this gorgeous light….so I had to sneak in a couple shots of our uber prep for the evening. Frankie, you look like a model for J. Crew. Chicago Yacht Club…here you come.

Christine certainly knows how to plan an amazing night for us. Check out her blog for tons of lifestyle tips and ideas.

I can count on these girls for everything….and our “funny friend” Frankie always knows how to get the group laughing. Rachel, Claire, Frankie, Amy, and Christine….It was such a perfect night!

We ended our evening watching the Navy Pier fireworks and admiring the beautiful Chicago skyline. It was one of those moments where all I could think about is how lucky I was to be here with these girls.

pretty little things :: packaging

I am so. so. so excited to finally share the final packaging that my clients will be recieving starting today.

Let’s face it, in the digital world, people hardly send anything in the mail which means if you are like me, your mailbox gets very little love (unless it comes from Amazon.com….). So when I started thinking of my packaging, I knew it had to be sassy, chic and a complete reflection of me and my brand.

Here is what I came up with……

Baby Peyton :: 3 months

When I learned that baby Peyton was on the way, I knew he was going to be my perfect baby model. Peyton is my cousin Jenni’s first son, so I am beyond excited to have this little guy in my life and even more excited to document him growing along the way for two amazing parents.

At his first big photo shoot at 3 months, he was exactly what I expected. Perfect!

During the 3 hours of shooting, he was completely fascinated with the camera, almost always looking straight into it. And the camera loves his huge blue eyes. Peyton is starting to smile more and more, so we had fun catching him giving little smirks at mom and dad.

This little nugget wants to be a part of the action at all time. He refused to fall asleep for his nap because he didn’t want to miss out on what was going on. But eventually he gave in and let me sneak some photos of him while he slept.

It was hard to pick my favorites from this session (because he is so adorable!), but here they are.

To see more of baby Peyton, feel free to CLICK HERE for a slideshow or simply watch it here…

Photographic Lessons Learned Traveling Through Central America + Peru

Over the last two months, I lugged a backpack I packed to the brim with my possessions through Peru and Central America. I was on a adventure. What I was looking for? A lifetime experience. I hiked through the Andes mountains. Explored the mysterious ruins of Machu Picchu. Practiced yoga on a pier in Utila. Spent the day with monkeys and sloths in Costa Rica. Surfed in the Pacific. Ate authentic rice and beans in Nicaragua.

I relaxed. I touched. I saw. I photographed. Anything that was beautiful, inspiring and made me feel alive. I fell in love over and over again with photography. Here are some of the things I learned behind the lens.

Imperfect weather sometimes makes for perfect photos

My first day in a new city is always my favorite day to photograph. However our first day in Cusco, Peru came with rain and clouds, so I was somewhat disappointed. But I continued to shoot and ended up with this fierce image of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo.

Beauty can be found in the most simple moments

For 28 days, I walked past the same flower in Quepos. And each day, as I walked past it, I smiled and admired how something so simple could be so gorgeous. I knew I had to preserve the flower’s beauty to admire for days to come by capturing it on my camera.

It is the thing that everyone else overlooks that can be the most intriguing

We hiked for 10 hours through the Peruvian jungle with our sights set on Machu Picchu. As the group forged ahead (because they were miles ahead of me), I looked to my right and noticed the vibrant, colored bug. How had everyone passed this amazing creature without drawing attention to it?

Be ready for the unexpected and do not hesitate to seize it

I was fortunate enough to see my fair share of stunning sunsets over tranquil waters while on our trip. So many, in fact, that I had stopped photographing them, but as I watched the sun dropping in the sky in Quepos, Costa Rica like many time before, the sky turned into a purple and pink watercolor that made you fall in love with sunsets all over again.

Sometimes it is less about where you are and more about who you are with

While there is something magical about being in a foreign place, it was my time spent with two of the most important men in my life – my boyfriend and my only brother – that inspired me to create this photo of our first surf lesson in Jaco, Costa Rica.

Away from the chaos, you gravitate to the things you truly love

Walking along the beautiful beaches of Roatan, Honduras, I found myself lost behind my camera, grinning ear to ear, as I took photos of palm trees and turquoise water. As I did this, I fell deeper in love with my art and photography.

Patience can lead to perfection if you are willing to wait

I knew I could not leave Manual Antonio Natural Park (Costa Rica) without some photos of the white-faced monkeys. I found an area with some monkeys but they were swinging back in the trees making it hard to get the shot I wanted. As I was waiting with my camera, this monkey gained enough trust in me to get close to me for this shot.

There is a story to be told with what may appear mundane

I noticed these women walking through the streets of Cusco. To others, they had just finished a days work of selling products on the streets, but in my eyes, this was a moment to capture the daily lifestyle of these Peruvian women.

When you are at a loss for words, photograph it

After 3 days of biking, hiking and crossing the roaring river in a metal basket (don’t ask), we made it to Machu Picchu. There is no real way to describe the awe, wonder, and mystery when you are there, so I did what I did best….photographed it.

I learned so much while traveling, but one of the most important things I took away from my trip was to let myself be inspired by the world around me, and in doing this, I will create stunning images to share.

Reverse the Curse :: Donate a Goat!

Today I threw on my red bottoms (jeans that is…I wish I was talking about Louboutins) and headed up to Wrigleyville for the Chicago Cubs’ opening day and to support and document a great cause: Reverse the Curse.

Last year, Jeremy Freeman, created Reverse the Curse for two reasons:

1. To help break the Chicago Cubs’ curse and bring them to the World’s Series

2. To donate goats to families in developing countries to help enrich their lives

I had the pleasure of documenting Billy the Goat and the loyal Cubs fans today. Let me tell you, opening day brings out die-hard fans (and a handful of trained drinkers…ok a lot of drinkers).

There was an enormous amount of interest and support for Reverse the Curse, but if you weren’t able to experience it firsthand, please check out Reverse the Curse to purchase a t-shirt or to learn more about how you can help donate a goat to a family in need!

Enjoy the photos from our super fun (but somewhat chilly!) day in Wrigley! :)
