How to Create a Double Exposure in Photoshop (With Tutorial)

For Photographers

Ever scroll through Instagram and see those dreamy, artistic double exposure images and wonder, how do they do that? It is an old techique that film photographers used to use – exposing the same frame 2x to layer two images. The good news—it’s easier than you think, and you don’t need fancy film cameras to make it happen and you can do this in post-production (which is especially amazing if you feel like your gallery is missing a little somethin’ somethin’ … here is your party trick!). With just two images and a quick blending trick in Photoshop, you can create that iconic layered effect in minutes.

In this tutorial, I’m breaking down my go-to double exposure method using Photoshop’s Screen layer mode—the same process I used in my Instagram Reel (watch it for a quick visual!).

Let’s dive in!

Double Exposure in Photoshop

What You Need for a Double Exposure in Photoshop

Before we start, make sure you have:

✔️ Two high-quality images – A portrait (or subject-focused image) and a texture, landscape, or abstract image to blend into it.
✔️ Adobe Photoshop – Any recent version will work.
✔️ A creative eye – Because this is where the fun happens!

Step-by-Step: How to Create a Double Exposure in Photoshop

Step 1: Open Your Base Image

Start by opening your main subject image in Photoshop. This is typically a portrait or a silhouette that will be the foundation of your double exposure effect. I find I like this best when I under expose this image.

Step 2: Add Your Second Image

Next, drag and drop your texture/landscape image on top of the base image. This could be trees, clouds, a city skyline—anything that adds visual interest.

Step 3: Change the Blend Mode to Screen

This is where the magic happens. With your second image layer selected, go to the Layers panel and change the blend mode from Normal → Screen. Instantly, the dark areas of the top image disappear, allowing it to blend beautifully with the base image.

Step 4: Refine the Effect

  • Use the Move Tool (V) to reposition the top image until it aligns perfectly with your subject.
  • If needed, use a Layer Mask to brush away parts of the second image for a cleaner blend.
  • Adjust Opacity or add a Curves or Levels adjustment layer to tweak brightness and contrast.

Step 5: Export & Share!

Once you’re happy with the effect, go to File → Export → Save for Web, and post your masterpiece!

Pro Tips for the Best Double Exposures

Use high-contrast images – Your subject should have defined edges for a crisp blend.
Experiment with different textures – Try forests, waves, or even handwritten text for unique effects.
Keep it subtle – Less is often more. A clean blend makes for a stronger composition.
