Here are some of my favorite tips for what to wear for fall photos:
- Consider your location BEFORE selecting a color palette: If you are going to be in a neutral location like a beach, desert or brown field, any color will work. Taking photos in green field or park, shy away from dressing the family in green or turquoise. Use your location to help decide on a color palette.
- Dress Coordinated But Not Matched: Choose a color scheme that complements each family member’s skin tone, and coordinate outfits without everyone wearing the exact same thing. You don’t want to look matchy, matchy or like twins but rather that you have styled everyone in a similar vibe.
- Add Layering: Fall weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. Sweaters, scarves, vests, and cardigans not only keep you warm but also add depth and texture to your photos and make you look like you stepped out of a catalog.
- Incorporate Textures and Patterns: Incorporate different textures (such as chunky knit, suede, or plaid) and subtle patterns to add visual interest to your outfits without being too distracting. Have one person in your family in a printed pattern and use that to tie the colors and style to everyone else. Pro tip : Trip to avoid having more than 1-2 people in a pattern to avoid your outfits being too busy on camera.
