Over the years, I have watched my clients become overwhelmed when it comes to picking out what to wear for their newborn photos. I *totally* get it. I 100% feel the same way when I am picking out what my family should wear for photos. I have studied what works for my clients and what photographs the best for all types of sessions and created tons of guides like my what to wear for your family session.
But here’s what I realized. Giving advice on what to wear is amazing. But what is even better …. is finding exactly what to order …. so all you have to do is hit add to cart, and you can have this figuring out what to wear thing off your list. :)
I searched through Amazon hunting down the perfect looks for your brand new baby, so that you don’t have to spend hours searching the internet for the cutest outfits / bows / hats / swaddles. All of these looks have been used by my clients over the years, and they are what I find works best for a lifestyle in-home or studio newborn session.
Use this list to shop on Amazon for the perfect outfits for your newborn for your newborn photos (or just snag them as really adorable outfits for hanging out at home). All of the Amazon items featured above are linked below.
Bows + Hats
If you have a baby girl on the way, bows, headbands, headwraps and turbans are must! Expecting a little man, beanies + hats are adorable on little boys (especially if you have a baby with light or little to no hair).
I find that these little bows work great for newborn girls. They are cute, fit their little heads, and don’t take over their faces. If you have a thing for big bows (and I totally do), these bows from Baby Bling are my favorites.
When it comes to hats + beanies, I *LOVE* these Copper Pearl hats. They are so stinkin’ cute and come in a ton of colors. You can pair them with a matching swaddle or have your little man rock it with a simple white onsie. Monica + Andy also have adorable top knot hats in a ton of adorable colors and prints. I love this one, this one and this one (especially for all my goldendoodle lovers)! And I love the floral girl’s hats from Copper Pearl too.
Matching Outfit Sets
When it comes to clothes, I personally think the simpler, the better. A solid color matching loungewear set is perfect for your newborn photos. I love this Mebie Baby set because it comes in three gorgeous neutrals. I also adore this waffle set that comes in great neutrals like blue, white, grey, pink, etc and this adorable ribbed jogger set + long sleeve onsie is also perfect for a cozy set for your babe’s photos.
Solid Onsies, Bodysuits, Sleepers + Rompers
Simple solid color onsies, bodysuits and sleepers are perfect options if you want to have your little one in clothes. These long sleeve and kimono ribbed bodysuits are so cute. You can pair them with a pair of pants or just leave your little one in the onsie. Here are a few of my other favorites that are perfect for your newborn photos (all pictured above).
I am a sucker for a newborn baby on white bedding in nothing but a solid white diaper. Anyone else? Maybe it feels like a Gerber ad … but there is something so innocent about it. I love the solid white Honest Company diapers for these types of photos. If you can’t decide on what your newborn should wear, a white diaper is a simple solution.
If you aren’t an expert swaddler (hand raise if this is you — because it is 100% me), I find that these knit sleeping gowns are great for newborns. They are fitted and look cute for solo shots or family photos. Stick with a gorgeous neutral color or go for a hint of color with a soft blue or soft pink.
Here are a few of my favorite sleeping gowns :
Swaddling your newborn is one of my favorite newborn looks especially for solo photos of him or her. These Copper Pearl swaddles are *the* best because they are extra soft and stretchy, making swaddling super easy. You can even snag a matching hat or pair it with a cute bow to complete the look. I love the camel, pink and blue swaddles.
If you are looking for something with more style or a fun, modern print, I love the muslin swaddles from Mebie Baby. This floral one is adorable for a little girl or sage mudcloth one would be so fun for a little boy.
Still not sure of what to wear for newborn photos? Don’t stress! Any of these options are adorable and will ensure that you have timeless, adorable photos of your newborn baby. When selecting what to put your newborn in for your photo session, keep these 3 things in mind :
- Stick with neutrals like creams, whites, greys. Every baby looks so innocent and sweet in neutrals and it helps keep your photos timeless. Dressing your little one in neutrals or soft pastels will allow your photos to be displayed in any room in your home. If you know exactly where you are going to display your photos, you can coordinate your color palette for your shoot based on the room, but I find that sticking with soft neutrals works best.
- Order multiple options before your little one arrives. This way, if you have a teeny tiny babe or a babe who doesn’t quite fit into newborn clothes, you have a few options for your session.
- You can change your newborn during the shoot so if you want him or her to wear one thing for photos of him/her solo and then something different for the family photos, we can totally do that. Just keep in mind that changing your newborn may wake them up. And try to have both looks match what you will wear for the shoot — so we can capture all those moments in between too.
